ABOUT CHRISTADELPHIANS
____________________________________

The Christadelphians are a small religious group of people who follow the faith and beliefs of the first century Christians as recorded in the Bible. We believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God and our only guide for life. (Colossians 1:2; Hebrews 2:11)

We have been in existence for over 150 years. The name "Christadelphian" comes from two Greek words that mean "brothers in Christ". We are located in many countries throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia and Africa. Like the early Christians, we meet in homes, rented rooms and in some cases our own halls. (Acts 1:13-14; 2:46-47; 18:7; 28:30)

Most congregations are called an 'ecclesia' (the Greek New Testament word for church). We have no paid clergy or church hierarchy. Members of each congregation are often addressed as 'brother' or 'sister', and all are involved in organising our ecclesial activities. Members contribute their time and energy voluntarily in service to God. A strong common belief binds our brotherhood together. (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-27; Galatians 3:28). Membership is extended to those with similar beliefs after being baptised (fully immersed in water).

A Brief History
Many believers since the apostles have held the same faith as the Christadelphians. There have been countless independent communities around the world who have eagerly studied the Bible and accepted its simple teachings.

The Christadelphians trace the history of their community to the mid-1800s. In 1830, an English physician named John Thomas sailed to America. On the voyage, the ship met some unexpected bad weather and nearly sank. For the first time, Dr Thomas faced the reality of his own mortality and was dismayed to discover that he was not sure what lay beyond death. In the midst of the storm, he vowed that, should he survive, he would not rest until he had found a satisfactory answer.

He did survive and kept his vow, beginning a lifelong search for the truth. It soon became evident to him that many of the doctrines that were popularly taught and believed were inconsistent with the Bible. Dissatisfied, Dr Thomas devoted himself to a careful independent study of the Scriptures. He made no claim to any vision or personal revelation.

The work of Dr Thomas attracted the support of others in America and Britain who were convinced of the truth of his conclusions. Together they formed the Christadelphian community. Since then, Christadelphian ecclesias have been established in many countries all over the world.

Our Beliefs - The Bible
We believe that the Bible is God's only revealed message to mankind, given to bring individuals to belief and faith in God and his Son. The Bible is our only authority and it should be read prayerfully and with care at every opportunity.

These Jews were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they eagerly received the message, examining the scriptures carefully every day to see if these things were so.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’s own imagination, for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Our Beliefs - Man
We believe man is mortal and a sinner before God. His whole being is prone to sin and the punishment for sin is death-the end of all life. But God has a purpose.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Jeremiah 17:9
The human mind is more deceitful than anything else. It is incurably bad. Who can understand it?

Mark 7:21-23
He [Jesus] said, “What comes out of a person defiles him. For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. All these evils come from within and defile a person.”

James 1:13-15
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires. Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.

Our Beliefs - Sacrifice of Jesus
We believe Jesus was sinless. He died to redeem those who receive this sacrifice by faith. God raised him from the dead, gave him immortality, granted him all authority in heaven and on earth, and set him as the mediator between God and man.

Ephesians 1:19-23; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 4:14-16; Romans 3:21-26

Ephesians 1:19-23
...and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength. This power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms far above every rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And God put all things under Christ’s feet, and he gave him to the church as head over all things. Now the church is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

1 Timothy 2:5-6

Hebrews 4:14-16
Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.

Romans 3:21-26
But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (although it is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed— namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed. This was also to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness.

Those who are out in the country must not enter it, because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

“And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves. People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the other trees. When they sprout leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near. So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

John 5:28-29

2 Timothy 4:1

Isaiah 2:2-4
In the future the mountain of the Lord’s temple will endure as the most important of mountains, and will be the most prominent of hills. All the nations will stream to it,

many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mountain, to the temple of the God of Jacob, so he can teach us his requirements, and we can follow his standards.” For Zion will be the center for moral instruction; the Lord will issue edicts from Jerusalem.

He will judge disputes between nations; he will settle cases for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nations will not take up the sword against other nations, and they will no longer train for war.

Isaiah 9:6-9
For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called: Extraordinary Strategist, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His dominion will be vast and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. He will rule on David’s throne and over David’s kingdom, establishing it and strengthening it by promoting justice and fairness, from this time forward and forevermore. The Lord’s intense devotion to his people will accomplish this.

God’s Judgment Intensifies The sovereign master decreed judgment on Jacob, and it fell on Israel.

All the people were aware of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said,

Isaiah 11:1-9
A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s root stock, a bud will sprout from his roots.

The Lord’s spirit will rest on him— a spirit that gives extraordinary wisdom, a spirit that provides the ability to execute plans, a spirit that produces absolute loyalty to the Lord.

He will take delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by mere appearances, or make decisions on the basis of hearsay.

He will treat the poor fairly, and make right decisions for the downtrodden of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and order the wicked to be executed.

Justice will be like a belt around his waist, integrity will be like a belt around his hips.

A wolf will reside with a lamb, and a leopard will lie down with a young goat; an ox and a young lion will graze together, as a small child leads them along.

A cow and a bear will graze together, their young will lie down together. A lion, like an ox, will eat straw.

A baby will play over the hole of a snake; over the nest of a serpent an infant will put his hand.

They will no longer injure or destroy on my entire royal mountain. For there will be universal submission to the Lord’s sovereignty, just as the waters completely cover the sea.

Isaiah 61:1-11
The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners,

to announce the year when the Lord will show his favor, the day when our God will seek vengeance, to console all who mourn,

to strengthen those who mourn in Zion, by giving them a turban, instead of ashes, oil symbolizing joy, instead of mourning, a garment symbolizing praise, instead of discouragement. They will be called oaks of righteousness, trees planted by the Lord to reveal his splendor.

They will rebuild the perpetual ruins and restore the places that were desolate; they will reestablish the ruined cities, the places that have been desolate since ancient times.

“Foreigners will take care of your sheep; foreigners will work in your fields and vineyards.

You will be called, ‘the Lord’s priests, servants of our God.’ You will enjoy the wealth of nations and boast about the riches you receive from them.

Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. Yes, they will possess a double portion in their land and experience lasting joy.

For I, the Lord, love justice and hate robbery and sin. I will repay them because of my faithfulness; I will make a permanent covenant with them.

Their descendants will be known among the nations, their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will recognize that the Lord has blessed them.”

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; I will be overjoyed because of my God. For he clothes me in garments of deliverance; he puts on me a robe symbolizing vindication. I look like a bridegroom when he wears a turban as a priest would; I look like a bride when she puts on her jewelry.

For just as the ground produces its crops and a garden yields its produce, so the sovereign Lord will cause deliverance to grow, and give his people reason to praise him in the sight of all the nations.

Psalm 72
O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions! Grant the king’s son the ability to make fair decisions!

Then he will judge your people fairly, and your oppressed ones equitably.

The mountains will bring news of peace to the people, and the hills will announce justice.

He will defend the oppressed among the people; he will deliver the children of the poor and crush the oppressor.

People will fear you as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky, for generation after generation.

He will descend like rain on the mown grass, like showers that drench the earth.

During his days the godly will flourish; peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky.

May he rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth!

Before him the coastlands will bow down, and his enemies will lick the dust.

The kings of Tarshish and the coastlands will offer gifts; the kings of Sheba and Seba will bring tribute.

All kings will bow down to him; all nations will serve him.

For he will rescue the needy when they cry out for help, and the oppressed who have no defender.

He will take pity on the poor and needy; the lives of the needy he will save.

From harm and violence he will defend them; he will value their lives.

May he live! May they offer him gold from Sheba! May they continually pray for him! May they pronounce blessings on him all day long!

May there be an abundance of grain in the earth; on the tops of the mountains may it sway! May its fruit trees flourish like the forests of Lebanon! May its crops be as abundant as the grass of the earth!

May his fame endure! May his dynasty last as long as the sun remains in the sky! May they use his name when they formulate their blessings! May all nations consider him to be favoured by God!

The Lord God, the God of Israel, deserves praise! He alone accomplishes amazing things!

His glorious name deserves praise forevermore! May his majestic splendor fill the whole earth! We agree! We agree!

This collection of the prayers of David son of Jesse ends here.

The Promises
We believe the Gospel is inseparable from the promises which God made to Abraham and David in Old Testament times. These promises find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:6-9, 16; 26-29; Genesis 13:14-17; 22:15-18; 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Luke 1:31-33
Reveal quotes
Galatians 3:6-9
Just as Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, so then, understand that those who believe are the sons of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the gospel to Abraham ahead of time, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who believe are blessed along with Abraham the believer.

Galatians 3:16
Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture does not say, “and to the descendants,” referring to many, but “and to your descendant,” referring to one, who is Christ.

Galatians 3:26-29
For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female—for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to the promise.

Genesis 13:14-17
After Lot had departed, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west. I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted. Get up and walk throughout the land, for I will give it to you.”

Genesis 22:15-18
The Lord’s angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “‘I solemnly swear by my own name,’ decrees the Lord, ‘that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies. Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.’”

2 Samuel 7:12-16
When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent. I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings. But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.’”

Luke 1:31-33
Listen: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

The Way of Salvation
We believe we are saved by God's grace though faith in Him and His son Jesus Christ. This involves belief in the Bible and obedience to its requirements that men and women confess their sins, repent, be baptised and follow Jesus faithfully.

Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

2 Thessalonians 2:13

...and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Acts 2:37-38
Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “What should we do, brothers?” Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”

Mark 16:16
The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned.

John 3:3-5
Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb and be born a second time, can he?” Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Matthew 16:24-27
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Our Way of Life
The Bible gives effective direction to our lives. We try to rely fully upon God and develop a faith which is active in prayer and good works. At the same time, however, we recognise that salvation is by grace.

With God's help, we seek to please and obey Him every day, striving to imitate Christ who faithfully obeyed his Father. We therefore endeavour to be enthusiastic in work, loyal in marriage, generous in giving, dedicated in preaching and happy in our God.

A widespread custom among Christadelphians is to read the Bible every day. We may also attend Bible classes each week. Following the New Testament example, and Christ’s instruction, we pray to God, our Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus his son. Jesus is our advocate in prayer, knowing our weaknesses. Prayer is an important part of our lives, both individually and in our meetings.

Every Sunday we attend a service we call the "Memorial Meeting" or "Breaking of Bread". All baptised members partake of bread and wine to remind us of the life and death of the Lord Jesus Christ. Attendance at this service is the central focus of our religious life and beginning of a new week.

Since we have no paid ministers, our members take turns to serve our community in all of its functions – Sunday School, Youth Groups, preaching the gospel at home and overseas and caring for people in need. We love to sing and praise God for his amazing character and purpose with us and this is an important part of all our worship.
Some Important Differences
Often we are asked, “How are you different from other Christian groups?” Apart from our distinctive organization (with no clergy or hierarchy), our understanding of the Bible differs from that of other more well-known Christian churches.

We believe the Bible teaches that Jesus was uniquely the Son of God, not God himself. It was an incredible sacrifice of our Father to give the life of His perfect Son for sinners like us to have a way of Salvation. There is no passage in the Bible that speaks of “God the Son”, only “the Son of God”! Jesus Christ had to struggle against sin, learn obedience and grow in his relationship with God and men as we do and in the reality of his death, provided redemption for humans. If he was God, he could not be tempted, neither could he die. We are so in debt to Jesus Christ himself and our Father for this amazing sacrifice of his only begotten Son, who died that we might live. (1 Timothy 2:5, 6:16, 1 Corinthians 11:3, Hebrews 5:8, James 1:13)

The Bible also teaches that our hope for eternal life is in the resurrection when Jesus returns. God’s plan is very clear that He will fill the earth with his glorious character – to be seen in all men! Our hope is to live forever with Christ in this amazing Kingdom to be set up on earth. (John 3:13, Acts 2:34, 1 Thessalonians 4:16)

We also believe that the Bible uses the word ‘Devil’ as a symbol of sinful human nature. We are personally responsible to God for our actions, for it is out of the heart of man that evil is formed. We all need a relationship with God and his forgiveness when we fall, to continue in our faithful walk to His Kingdom. (Isaiah 45:7, Mark 8:33, John 6:70, Hebrews 1:14)
